- You will need a medium sized ball. Sit on the floor next to a wall. Roll ball up the wall using only the fingers to push it up. As the ball gets higher the child stands and stretches arm as far as he/can push ball. Then start bringing the ball all the way down to the bottom of the wall. When the ball gets low the child sits...but do not let go or drop the ball. This should be done slowly keeping control of the ball. Do not use palm or heel of hand. All the fingers should be used. It might be tricky at first. To make it fun, have a race with a sibling or parent. This can be done with both hands.
- You will need marbles or any small object around the size of a marble; eg; pebbles. Pick the marbles up off the floor one at a time using only thumb and forefinger. When each marble is picked up the child then places it in the palm of their hand. Do not use other hand to help. While holding the marble pick up another marble and do the same thing. Keep going until you can't fir any more marbles in your palm. Do this with both hands.
- Touch tips of fingers starting with thumb and forefinger, then thumb and middle finger and so on. Repeat over and over going from thumb to pinky and then pinky to thumb. Repeat this at least 8 times.
- You will need to collect about 5 plastic rings from juice/milk bottles. Place all the rings over the thumb and using other fingers remove the rings one at a time. Try using pinky finger then other fingers too.
- Using tweezers (preferably small plastic ones), pick up small objects and place in a container. Then place stone/pebble/marble in palm of hand and repeat exercise like this.
- Using A4 sheets of paper, child scrunches paper in the hand until scrunched into a ball. You cannot use other hand for help. Once mastered attempt to do this while keeping elbows by your side. Then open paper out onto table/floor again only using that hand. Also fun to make this into a race.
- Crumple up very small pieces of paper only using first 3 finger and then flick them as far as possible
- Hit tennis ball on wall with tennis racket.
- Balance tennis ball on racket. Keep control so ball doesn't fall off.
- You will need a Swiss ball, approx 50-70cm. Bounce ball in front of body, keeping forearms straight from the elbow. Keep the ball in control and bouncing slower is better than doing it fast as the muscles work better when there is control. Make sure ball doesn't bounce higher than child's waist. Try do as many as possible until child gets tired...at least 20.
Try to do these exercises at least 4 times a week. You can choose 3 to do at a time and rotate them over the week. Be consistent and in a couple of weeks you notice a difference. Continue these exercises for as long as possible over a period of a few weeks or longer. It doesn't hurt to do them long term.
